Top Manchester design retailer Ferrious played host to the finals of a competition to design a new soft seating range for the education market. The competition, sponsored by furniture manufacturers ‘Ryan’ and ‘Chorus’, attracted entries from professionals and students from across the region, and was judged by top furniture designer Simon Pengelly.
The competition attracted entries from a host of professional design and architecture studios, and among the entries were some from 3D Design graduates and students. 3rd year students Ian Fleming, Diane Walton, Joshua Till and Theresa Kitching, put together a curvaceous linking seating concept, graduates Tom Watson & Joshua Dodds put in a joint concept for upholstered bench seating, and Jake Campbell proposed a modular sofa concept.
Two prizes were awarded, one prize from Simon Pengelly, and another judged and awarded by the designers at the event on the night. So it was great result when it was announced the 3D Design Graduates Watson & Dodds had won the designers event prize!
The prize of a set of Tom Dixon lights was a welcome bonus, but the real prize was to have their work recognized by their peers, and the chance for them to meet manufacturers who they can potentially work with to develop their concept through to production.
So a great event, fantastically hosted by Ferrious, (who among their staff they boast a number of our graduates, from designer and showroom manager Katie Crolla, to new rising star Gianluca Mingolla) – a great result for 3D Design, and a great success for our graduates!
